Which smartwatch or fitness tracker is best for you?

There are benefits and drawbacks to both of these technologically advanced wristwatches.

It can be difficult to choose between a smartwatch and a fitness tracker. Most modern smartwatches have health and fitness tracking information, and many fitness trackers can also use third-party apps, receive SMS, and other features. The distinction between the two is, therefore, less distinct than ever before. Therefore, let's make a few things plain.

Smartwatches, in comparison to fitness trackers, typically include more advanced technology and can perform more tasks. Think of them as a companion gadget to your smartphone—models like the Apple Watch 9 and the Samsung Galaxy Watch 6 can do many of the same functions their smartphone equivalents do.

In contrast, fitness trackers are primarily intended to monitor one's physical activity and general health, however many of them also provide additional useful functions. Some of them can even afford to buy you a coffee at Starbucks. They're less bulky, lighter, and cheaper than smartwatches. 

Now that we've established that, let's talk about some common applications. 

My budget is $100

On a tight budget? Skip the cheap smartwatch and invest in a good fitness tracker instead. Popular trackers like the Fitbit Inspire 3 provide excellent value for only about a dollar and a half. 

However, if you have your heart set on a smartwatch in this price range, we advise you to keep an eye out for sales on highly rated models. For example, the Apple Watch SE is currently on sale for $109, which won't last long given that it's an early Black Friday promotion.  
While many different types of fitness trackers can alert you to incoming calls and messages, a wristwatch is your best bet for making and receiving calls and texts while on the go. In addition, a cellular-enabled device and data package will give you freedom from your smartphone. An Apple Watch is required for use with an iPhone, whereas the Google Pixel Watch 2 or the Samsung Galaxy Watch 5 are required for use with an Android phone.

Those interested in browsing the web from their wrist and installing a wide variety of third-party programs should opt for a smartwatch. Simply put, fitness trackers are not designed for this kind of work. 

Tracking my workouts matters most

There needs to be a clear winner here. Excellent workout monitoring capabilities may be found in both smartwatches and fitness trackers, thanks to the crossover of these two industries. Almost all contemporary wrist wearables have sensors for monitoring vitals including heart rate, oxygen levels in the blood, time spent exercising, distance traveled, and more. However, a fitness tracker is your best bet if you only want to keep tabs on your progress.  

I want something discreet yet capable

Wearable technology isn't universally considered chic. If discretion is crucial, a fitness tracker will be your best bet. Fitbit's Inspire series of trackers, for example, appear more like bracelets than nerdy technology. There are some stylish fitness trackers on the market, such as the Garmin Vivomove Sport. The massive Apple Watch Ultra series is not the same.  

I desire to monitor my sleep and recovery 

The best gadgets for tracking sleep and workout recovery tend to be fitness trackers, such as the screen-less Whoop 4.0 or even the Oura Ring 3. Garmin smartwatches, like Fitbit watches, also provide excellent data on how well you sleep and how quickly you recover. However, if you're only interested in learning more about your sleep, a tracker is your best bet because of its compact size, low weight, and comfort while you sleep.

I desire features that ensure my safety 

When personal security is paramount, a wristwatch is preferable to a fitness tracker. Many high-end smartwatches, such as the Apple Watch Ultra 2, Samsung Galaxy Watch 6, Google Pixel 2, and many others, have fall detection features that might be crucial in dangerous situations. Apple's Ultra line of products has a loud alarm that can be activated in an emergency. The majority of modern smartwatches also have an SOS button.  

I’m still not sure which device to get

Those of you who feel like you're in the middle, don't worry. There are lots of cross-over devices that straddle the boundary between fitness tracker and smartwatch. One such device is the Fitbit Charge 6, which features a sizable display, built-in GPS, compatibility with Google Apps, and the ability to make and receive mobile payments.
