You may be curious about the functionality of Apple's new double tap gesture if you've recently upgraded to an Apple Watch Series 9 or Apple Watch Ultra 2. The new function allows you to manage your watch by tapping your thumb and index finger together twice, so you don't have to reach for the screen if you have your hands full.
What may and cannot be done with the double tap gesture on the Apple Watch will be discussed in detail below.
What Apple Watches support the double tap gesture?
The new double tap gesture only works on the Apple Watch Series 9 and the Apple Watch Ultra 2 – previous Apple Watches will not have this feature, as it requires the new S9 processor, only accessible in the 2023 Apple Watches. The double-tap gesture requires the most recent watchOS 10.1 update on your Apple Watch.
Access the My Watch section of the Watch app on your iPhone, tap General, and then tap Software version to download and install the latest version for your watch.

When can’t you use double tap?
As indicated above, you can't interrupt an exercise with a double tap since Apple claims the watch wouldn't be able to tell the difference if you were already moving. The blue logo at the top of the screen will tremble if you try to perform the double-tap gesture on a device that doesn't support it.
Low Power Mode and Sleep Focus both prevent you from using the double tap gesture on your Apple Watch.

In Playback mode and while cycling through your Smart Stack, you can modify the behavior of the double-tap gesture. For instance, you can set it so that two taps play and pause the music instead of skipping tracks. Double tapping can either cycle through your Smart Stack or pick a widget from the stack, depending on your preference.
Double-tap settings can be adjusted in Apple Watch's System Preferences > Gestures > Double-tap.
How to turn the double tap on and off?
You can disable double tap entirely if you don't like using it. To disable Double Tap, head to your Apple Watch's Settings, tap Gestures, and then tap the toggle button.Related Contents
