In the event of a genuine crisis, the Emergency SOS feature on the Google Pixel can be of great assistance. Tap the power button five times in a row to dial 911 without having to unlock your phone first. This is a useful feature to have in situations where time is of the essence or when utilizing your phone's screen is not an option.

However, you will need to configure the Emergency SOS feature, and there are a variety of additional options that you will need to be familiar with. Including one that prevents you from accidentally dialing 911 when you're trying to get help. If these are not prepared in advance, the process will be more time-consuming when it really occurs.

Here is how to activate the Emergency SOS feature on a Google Pixel, as well as descriptions of what each of the individual features does.

When you are on the page for configuring Emergency SOS, all that is required to activate the feature is a tap on the white Turn on Emergency SOS button that is located at the very top of the screen. Because all of the other buttons are greyed out, this one is practically the only one you can press at this point.

5. (Optional) Tap the Settings gear to configure secondary verification

There is now a secondary verification mechanism available for use with Emergency SOS. This method was developed to lower the number of false alerts that waste valuable time for 911 operators. This is not something that can be negotiated, but you can decide between two different possibilities.

To verify that you are making a concerted effort to make a 911 call, the first choice requires you to tap and keep your finger on the screen for a minimum of three seconds. The second option is a countdown that will allow you the opportunity to back out of this transaction if it was a mistake.

6. (Optional) Toggle on Share info with emergency contacts

You also have the option to share information with your emergency contacts, presuming that you have already added these contacts to the Google Safety app. When you make a phone call to 911, your emergency contacts will receive texts with your real-time location and updates.

7. (Optional) Try a demo version

You are able to test out Emergency SOS with the demo version, without the risk of unintentionally dialing 911 in the process. This is helpful since it ensures that you are familiar with the procedure before a genuine emergency occurs.
To get started, hit the button labeled "Try a Demo" which is located in the middle of the screen, and then follow the instructions that appear.
