Apple Plans to Bring OLED to Nine New Devices By 2027

ET News in Taiwan claims that by 2027, Apple plans to incorporate OLED display technology into nine other products.

According to recent reports, Apple intends to bring OLED panels to the iPad mini and iPad Air in the year 2026, following the debut of OLED displays on both variants of the iPad Pro in the following year. The screen size of the iPad mini will increase from 8.3 inches to 8.7 inches, while the screen size of the iPad Air will remain the same at 10.9 inches. The rumored 12.9-inch iPad Air model, which is anticipated to launch early next year with an LCD display, will reportedly be equipped with OLED display technology in the year 2027 according to Apple.

According to reports, Apple intends to use a low-temperature polycrystalline oxide (LTPO) OLED panel for the iPad Pro and a single-stack low-temperature polycrystalline silicon (LTPS) panel for the iPad mini and iPad Air. This indicates that ProMotion, which supports refresh rates of up to 120Hz, will continue to be reserved for the higher-end models.

Apple plans to replace the OLED panels used in the iPad Pro with a next-generation panel in 2027. This panel will have enhanced light efficiency through the use of a Colour Filter on Encapsulation (CoE), which is estimated to cut power usage by around 20%. Apple may integrate under-display camera technology on the iPad for the first time if they use a color filter.

OLED displays are expected to make their debut on Apple's 16-inch MacBook Pro in 2025, with the 14-inch variant following two years later in 2026. In 2026, Apple will also make the switch from LCD to OLED for the 13- and 15-inch variants of the MacBook Air.

Compared to models that currently use LCD panels, OLED displays have enhanced brightness, higher contrast ratios, greater color accuracy, and reduced power usage. Other benefits include higher contrast ratios. Except for the iPhone SE, Apple products already use displays made from organic light-emitting diode (OLED) technology. According to the article, in addition to being lighter and smaller than LCDs, OLED screens offer unique benefits to electronic devices like the iPad.
